Today’s Championship betting tips
Looking for tips on today’s Championship games? Check the top of this page to see our tips for the upcoming matches. When betting on the day of the game, there is plenty to consider and you should always check the team news and form ahead of kick-off.
Championship In-Play betting tips
With so many Championship games now broadcast live, the league provides a great opportunity for some In Play betting tips.
This particular method of wagering allows you to tailor your bets to the unfolding action, whether that’s a high-profile play-off second-leg or a tussle at the bottom of the table.
Full Time Results
The Championship is often referred to as a league where any team can beat another, and that certainly can be the case. However, this means that there is often great value to be found in the Full Time Results markets, also known as win-draw-win bets.
With many games often taking place at the same time either at 3pm on Saturday afternoon or 7.45pm on a Tuesday evening, this particular market also offers ample opportunity for a Championship accumulator. You can often find great value on this type of bet with Virgin Bet.
Both Teams to Score
Both teams to score has become a very popular bet in recent years as the bet is still alive until the final whistle. The premise is simple – you’re backing both teams to find the net during the 90 minutes. Again, with low-odds usually available, it may be worth combining a few both teams to score selections for a tasty Championship accumulator on a Saturday afternoon for example.
These are the teams most likely to see both teams score in their games according to last season’s stats:
Derby County – BTTS 61%
Luton Town – BTTS 61%
Queens Park Rangers – BTTS 61%
Birmingham City – BTTS 59%
West Bromwich Albion – BTTS 59% (now promoted to the Premier League)
These teams are least likely to see goals from both sides:
Leeds United – BTTS 37% (now promoted to the Premier League)
Wigan Athletic – BTTS 43% (now relegated to League One)
Brentford – BTTS 45%
Middlesbrough – BTTS 48%
Stoke City – BTTS 48%
To Score a Header
The depth of betting options available now even allows you to bet on the method of goals and headers are particularly popular in the Championship. This could be an ideal bet if you’re looking for a tip on a Birmingham game for example – the experienced Lukas Jutkiewicz led the way for headed goals in the 2019/2020 with nine of his 15 league goals coming from headers.
Player Total Shots
You are now even able to bet on the amount of shots a player takes in a game and this type of bet is popular with our stats-loving Squawka experts. In the Championship including Saïd Benrahma of Brentford, who racked up no more than 177 shots in the league last season – you can usually bet on the Overs/Unders markets on how many attempts at goal a player will make in a game.
Player Total Tackles
As above, this bet allows you to wager on how many tackles a certain player will make over the course of a 90 minute match, over or above the line set by the bookmaker. One man to look out for in this market is Nottingham Forest’s Samba Sow, who average 4.49 tackles per 90 minutes last season – the highest of any player to play more than 1000 minutes in the Championship.

Bookings
There are several different markets available on bookings now too. You can back a certain player to receive a booking for example, or even a red card, or you can back the amount of cards shown in a match altogether.
You can even back how many cards are shown to a certain team, or a team to receive more cards than their opponents and we have all the stats to back up our selections in this market too.
A few players to consider in this market are Birmingham’s Gary Gardner, who topped the charts with 14 yellow cards last season and Huddersfield Town’s Jonathan Hogg, who was shown 12 yellow cards in 2019/2020.
Player Offsides
There are also prices available on players to be caught offside a certain amount of times during the game – another perfect market if you have the right stats on hand as we always do. For example, Middlesbrough forward Britt Assombalonga was caught offside more times than he started games for the Boro last season, seeing the flag raised 28 times despite starting just 27 matches.
Corners Taken
You can also bet on Under/Over markets in corners in 2020/2021 and also on the ‘Corners Match Result’ market, where you bet on one team to win more than the other during the match. One team to watch in this market are Nottingham Forest, who saw more average corners per match than any other side in the league last term.

Best Bookmakers for Championship
Every bookmaker offers great depth of markets on this league, although some more than others. There are several other factors to take into account when deciding upon a bookmaker to back our Championship tips with. For example, how much value do their odds provide, what is their customer service like and whether they produce any Championship betting offers.

When it comes to sports betting lines, you probably are wondering what the lingo of lines, odds, and spreads really mean. Understanding what these terms mean is essential to making proper picks on your favorite teams. For the most part these rules apply to all the main sports such as football, basketball, soccer, and hockey. But there are some key differences when betting against the big leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
Super Bowl and Stanley Cup Betting Odds
A betting line is another terminology for point spread, which is tied to the outcome of the event. It is a forecasted prediction of how many points an anticipated stronger team will win by against a weaker team. In the betting world the stronger team is referred to as the favorite, and the weaker team is referred to as the underdog. These collectively are referred to as spreads.
NHL, Baseball, WNBA Playoffs Betting Picks
In a point spread, you have to bet against the forecasted outcome one way or the other, you cannot just pick a team to win lose or it without laying down a lot of money or it would be too easy to beat a highly likely winner. Instead if a team is predicted to win by 7 points, the spread would be -7 towards that team. You then must place on a bet on whether you think the favorite would beat the underdog by at least 7 points, or if you think the underdog could cover and lose by less than 7 or win. Sometimes a game is considered highly contested and balanced that you might have what is called a pick-em where you simple pick which team will win. Point spreads are common in the NFL.

After point spreads are established, you can then look at the moneyline bet. This is generally correlated to the point spread except it shows how money you can win based on your wager. Some sports do not use a point spread but rather just stick to a moneyline bet. For example, a team that was a -7 favorite would likely have a moneyline negative as well, say -200. That means, you would have to bet $100 to win $200. Alternatively there is a plus bet that goes with the underdog, say at 250. That means if you bet 100 and the underdog wins, you can win $250. Moneyline bets generally involve a higher wager to make money as opposed to point spreads. Moneyline picks are the most common wager instrument in the major sports of NBA, MLB, hockey, and soccer.

In unique situations, where a game has a lot of prestige such as the NFL super bowl , NBA playoffs, or the Stanley Cup, you can bet on prop bets which are bets on specific things that could happen during a game. This is a play strictly based on odds of something happen against it not happening. An example might be whether a field goal would be the first type of score in the football game. At any time as people are betting one way or the other, the odds will adjust as people make picks one way or the other.

Opening lines generally come out a week before an event but for major events like the Superbowl, it might be out for two weeks once the matchup is established. Football events opening lines generally come out on a Tuesday after all the previous weeks games have been played and is usually the sport most heavily used to gamble on. Basketball and MLB have games more frequently and usually the opening line might only exist for the day of an event.
